Battery management systems (BMSs) are discussed in depth, as are their applications in EVs and renewable energy storage systems. This review covered topics ranging from voltage and current monitoring to the estimation of charge and discharge, protection, equalization of cells, thermal management, and actuation of stored battery data.
One way to figure out the battery management system's monitoring parameters like state of charge (SoC), state of health (SoH), remaining useful life (RUL), state of function (SoF), state of performance (SoP), state of energy (SoE), state of safety (SoS), and state of temperature (SoT) as shown in Fig. 11 . One of the key functions of a BMS is cell balancing, which ensures that each cell in a battery pack is charged and discharged uniformly. Cells in series often exhibit slight differences in capacity, causing certain cells to overcharge or undercharge.
The BMS employs multiple algorithms including coulomb counting, voltage-based estimation, and advanced techniques like Kalman filtering to provide precise charge level information. SOC accuracy directly impacts user experience and battery protection. Overestimation can lead to over-discharge, while underestimation reduces usable capacity.
